12th May, 1941 : A convoy, code-named Tiger, of freighters carrying 238 tanks and 43 Hurricane fighters aircraft reaches Alexandria. Their dispatch has been personally authorised by Churchill, in reply to the urgent message sent him by Wavell on 20 April in which he asked for reinforcements to help redress the balance on the Egyptian-Libyan border, now that the arrival of Rommel has wiped out all the British gains in Cyrenaica.
