No pain no gain – but unfortunately unnecessary pain when the obvious dangers are ignored. Politicians suffer no pain – you do.

26th May, 1941 : Seeing how the situation has deteriorated, Freyberg tells Wavell that in his view the only course left is to evacuate the island and save at least part of the Allied force.

The British aircraft carrier Formidable is seriously damaged by dive-bombers and has to be sent to American dockyards for repair.

Hammered by artillery and aircraft and under violent pressure by the German troops, the British have to retire eastwards to Mournies, while the Greeks withdraw inland to the south.
