NEWS FROM THE FRONT

No pain no gain – but unfortunately unnecessary pain when the obvious dangers are ignored. Politicians suffer no pain – you do.

16th July, 1941 : Finnish troops break through the Soviet positions north of Lake Lagoda and occupy Sortavala at the extreme north of the lake.

In the central section of the front the troops of the Army Group Centre, continuing their advance, begin the destruction of the enormous Soviet forces trapped in a pocket in the Uman area, as well as undertaking mopping-up operations in the Dnieper basin.

The system of political commissars is re-introduced in the Red Army. The commissars are disliked by the commanders for functional reasons, and a year later they are abolished again.

Hitler sends for Goering, Keitel, Larres, Borman and the Nazi theorist Rosenberg and at his headquarters expound to them the Reich’s objectives in the east: division of part of the occupied territories into four Reich Commission territories and direct annexation to the ‘Great Reich’ of the richest provinces, including the Crimea. Rosenberg is appointed head of a new ministry for eastern occupied territories. His task will be not only the exploitation of those territories for the benefit of the German economy, but also their political ‘reclamation’ – elimination of the Communists and deportation of the Jews.

About Ludwig von Gress

Born in communist Europe, interested in defence matters on a macro scale, with a cavalry “devil may care spirit” from his grandfather and cautious effectiveness of asymmetric warfare approach from his guerilla father. He sometimes despairs that he may be the only one taking the defence of Australia seriously.
