No pain no gain – but unfortunately unnecessary pain when the obvious dangers are ignored. Politicians suffer no pain – you do.

30th July, 1941 : President Roosevelt’s counsellor, Harry Hopkins, is in Moscow to discuss the despatch of help to the USSR.

At Chungking, the American river-gunboat Tutuila is bombed by Japanese aircraft. Next day the Japanese Government apologises to the Americans for the incident.
