No pain no gain – but unfortunately unnecessary pain when the obvious dangers are ignored. Politicians suffer no pain – you do.

12th August, 1941 : Hitler issues Directive No. 34 on the conduct of operations. The Army Group South is to prevent the enemy from re-occupying the eastern bank of the Dnieper, and to occupy the Crimea, the industrial district of Kharkov and the coal fields of the Donetz basin. The Army Group North is to follow up its offensive with the aim of cutting off Leningrad and joining up with the Finns. The Army Group centre ( contrary to the precise intentions of von Brauchitsch) is to suspend the offensive against Moscow for the time being and send part of its forces to support the operations of the other two army groups.

Admiral Darlan is appointed Vichy Minister of National Defence and head of of the newly formed Ministry of National and Empire Defence. Marshal Pétain announces the adoption of a series of totalitarian measures, including the suppression of all political parties, the setting up of special courts, the reorganisation of the economy on cooperative lines and the doubling of the police force.
