No pain no gain – but unfortunately unnecessary pain when the obvious dangers are ignored. Politicians suffer no pain – you do.

19th September, 1941 : End of the battle of Kiev. The Germans occupy the city (the third largest in Russia), but in so doing they lose many dead, for the Russians have left mines everywhere. They have also left much of the city in ruins.


According to German sources they captured 600,000 prisoners in the Kiev sector, and the Russians lost 2,500 guns and 1,000 tanks. Again, according to the Germans, from the start of operations up to 31 August the Wehrmacht lost on the Eastern front 86,000 dead, 20,000 missing and 292,000 wounded. About 4,000 men were taken prisoners by the Russians.

An Italian raiding party landed from the submarine Scire sinks 30,000 tons of Allied shipping in Gibraltar harbour.
