NEWS FROM THE FRONT
7th December, 1941 : At 7.55 a.m. local time, with no declaration of war, Japanese aircraft carry out a huge surprise attack on the big American air and naval base. Eight battleships are sunk or badly damaged; three cruisers, three destroyers, two auxiliary ships, one mine-layer and one target-ship are sunk. 188 aircraft are destroyed or damaged on the ground. Reported casualties are 2,729 dead and 656 wounded.
The backbone of the American Pacific fleet has been eliminated from the conflict before it has even begun. It will be long before American industrial power can replace the losses and achieve superiority.
