NEWS FROM THE FRONT

No pain no gain – but unfortunately unnecessary pain when the obvious dangers are ignored. Politicians suffer no pain – you do.

26th December, 1941 : Manila is declared an open city, but the Japanese continue to bomb it severely. Admiral Rockwell transfers the naval defences to Corregidor. The American and Filipino land forces retire from the Agno river to the line Santa Ignacia-Cuimba-San Jose. Those coming from the south of the island establish a defensive line west of Sariaya.

Malaya: The town of Ipoh is evacuated by the 11th Indian Division: small detachments carry out rear-guard actions north of Ipoh, near Kemor.

The population of Saint-Pierreet-Miquelon votes by plebiscite to recognise the change of government, from Vichy to that of de Gaulle. The decision is not welcome in Washington, which has not yet recognised Gaullist authority and still maintains diplomatic relations with Vichy.

About Ludwig von Gress

Born in communist Europe, interested in defence matters on a macro scale, with a cavalry “devil may care spirit” from his grandfather and cautious effectiveness of asymmetric warfare approach from his guerilla father. He sometimes despairs that he may be the only one taking the defence of Australia seriously.
